Project Areas:
Headspace of living flowers (roses, orchids, etc.), includes selection, composition and formulation.
Patent infringement of Orbitz beads in Clearly Canadian beverages (dyes and gellangum).
Oxidative stability of musk aroma compounds in aqueous media.
Fixative properties of essential oils (e.g., ylang-ylang oil).
Composition of strawberry flavors.
Establish turpentine and Tall oil precursors in loblolly pines.
Time-release studies of insect repellants from various matrices to combat the Nantucket tip moth.
Determine trace ppb levels of plant growth regulator in sweetgum leaves using isotopic dilution analysis.
Determine ppm levels of anthraquinone in Tall oil and related distillation streams.
Estimated odor intensity, defined odor character of off-odor in rosin ink resins.
Developed characterization scheme for analysis of dimer-acid polyamides as well as phenolic-modified ink resins.
Identify surfactants in competitor's aqueous polyamide dispersions.
Characterized competitive products for reverse engineering and for patent protection. Resulted in new dimer acid polyamides and phenolic modified rosin esters formulated by the company.
Characterization of a potential takeover company's polyamides revealed their infringement on a third party's patent.
Led a project as chief investigator to capture the headspace aroma of living plants resulting in over 40 new fragrant floral bases used by perfumers for a new fragrance product line.
Provided technical and administrative support to four chemists on wood-based chemical research projects. Some of these project goals were to improve existing processes for fatty acid distillation, synthesize new rosin acid pentaerthyritol esters, and understand the effect of components upono the properties of dimer acid polyamides.
Developed wet chemical and chromatographic methods for terpene aroma chemicals and tall oil acids.
Exxon Research, Analytical Chemist 1967-1970
Responsibility for polynuclear aromatics lab, which provided FDA clearance procedures for company products, supported government contract projects on air pollution control, and utilized radioisotope tracer techniques.
