Thin film science and engineering for coating a very thin layers of a metal, ceramic, semiconductor or polymer material on a substrate. Such coating are offtenless than one micron thick. Engineered thin films can have designed optical, electrical, semiconducting, barrier and chemical properties. Thin films are most often deposited by sputtering, chemical vapor depostion or sol gel coating technolgy.
