Experience

Undisclosed Company, Technical Consultant, 2015 - Present

  • Serve as the primary interface with CMOs that work on the synthesis of the company's dextran based compounds.
  • Troubleshoot and propose tactics and strategies to improve the synthetic process and ultimately produce an optimized drug product.

Undisclosed Company, Cofounder - Executive Director of Research and Development, 2010 - 2014

  • Continuing the development of a novel class of biocompatible polymer-drugs, developed by Polymerix Corporation, having broad applications in the wound healing and medical device markets.
  • Incorporating common drug compounds, such as salicylic acid, directly into the chemical structure of the polymer chain itself thus allowing the controlled delivery of drugs directly at the injury site to promote healing.
  • Responsible for all research and development functions regarding drug delivery polymer synthesis, characterization and application, including defining and implementing developmental collaborations with potential customers.
  • Successfully synthesized numerous batches of polymers with tight control of molecular weight, molecular weight distribution and glass transition temperature.
  • Developed and finalized into SOPs all monomer and polymer syntheses and established specifications on all materials.
  • Identified a CMO to commercially provide these materials and secured relevant quotes.
  • Successfully incorporated the polymers as coatings on sutures and demonstrated 7-14 days controlled delivery of salicylic acid from the surface of the fibers.
  • Identified and interacted with potential customers for the development of collaborative research programs: developed objectives, timelines and work tasks for each project.

Sealy Corporation, Trinity NC, City, Consultant, 2006 - 2007

  • Responsible for the characterization of the chemical properties of Sealy's latex operations and determining optimum process parameters based on the initial characterization effort for a new plant start-up.

Polymerix Corporation, Piscataway, NJ, Director of Research and Development, 2004 - 2005

  • This company initially invented a novel class of biocompatible polymer-drugs having broad applications in the wound healing and medical device markets.
  • The technology incorporates common drug compounds, such as salicylic acid, directly into the chemical structure of the polymer chain itself. These formulations enable the controlled delivery of drugs directly at the injury site to promote healing.
  • Responsible for the entire operation of the lab: polymer research and development; polymer manufacturing; university programs; and business development to define new markets.
  • Developed research and feasibility programs with 5 major companies in the areas of intraarticular arthritis injection and coatings for stents, hernia meshes and sutures.
  • Established initial communications with 3 companies for applications in contact lenses, polyurethane coatings for biofilm prevention and bone composites.
  • Synthesis scale up - identified and initiated negotiations with 4 contract manufacturers to develop kg processes for both monomers and polymers.
  • Developed and coordinated a program with Lehigh University that defined new polymerization techniques.

Ferrells PLLC, Fairfax, VA, Intellectual Property Consultant, 2002 - 2005

  • Created new cases (specifications and claims) based on client invention disclosures.
  • Provided technical opinions regarding infringements between client technology and prior art/current practice.

NJ Center for Biomaterials, Piscataway, NJ, Membership Consultant, 2002 - 2005

  • Interacted with the member companies to establish research and development programs defining fundamentally new biomaterials for drug delivery and tissue engineering applications.

DuPont Corporation,Wilmington, DE, Consultant, Business - Technology Licensing, 1999 - 2002

  • Responsible for assisting the Intellectual Assets Business Unit in the licensing or sale of polymer science based intellectual property.
  • Extracted and summarized relevant technical information from 1264 patents (7 business units).
  • Segmented the technology into categories and prepared 16 patent technology digests.
  • Identified 225 customers through patent citation analysis and market research.
  • Matched available patent technology with these customer needs.
  • Developed 16 presentation packages (technology and market based) for customer visits.

Hoechst Celanese Corporation, Summit, NJ, 1973 - 1998

Program Manager, 1987 - 1998

  • Managed a team of 8 scientists and supporting staff that developed aromatic liquid crystal polyesters with superior barrier and mechanical properties for use in automobile multi-layer fuel tanks with a potential annual market of $50-$75 million. Project was transferred to the Business Unit for commercialization.
  • Managed a cross functional group of 14 professionals that developed a burn stable automobile airbag, based on PET, that offered a lower cost alternative to the automaker. Market potential was $44 million. The project was transferred to the Business Unit.
  • Created, staffed and directed a synthesis group of 16 scientists responsible for the development of new nonlinear optical polymers.
  • Novel polymers were prepared which allowed the fabrication of unique devices. Secured broad patent coverage for this family of materials.

Staff Scientist, 1983 - 1987

  • Designed and synthesized novel polymers that were the first amorphous side chain polymers that exhibited superior second order nonlinear optical properties.
